Good to know: The city has a long, shallow sandy beach and Roman remains, but not the clear coves or mountain scenery of southern Albania. Tirana and Krujë are roughly an hour away in normal traffic; Berat takes around one and a half to two and a half hours. Sarandë, Ksamil, Theth, Koman and Montenegro make very long days.

Frequently asked questions

What is Durrës best known for?

Durrës is Albania’s main port, with a Roman amphitheatre, a long Adriatic promenade and a broad, shallow sandy beach. It is also a pickup base for day trips across central and southern Albania.

Is Durrës a good base for Bovilla Lake and Krujë?

Yes, both are commonly sold with pickup in Durrës or Golem. Allow roughly an hour on the road in normal traffic, plus extra time for the rough final approach to Bovilla.

How long does a day trip to Berat take?

The road journey is roughly one and a half to two and a half hours each way depending on traffic and the route. Most organised tours occupy nine to ten hours.

Are Sarandë and Ksamil realistic day trips?

They are bookable, but not short: current listings run about 15 to 17 hours. An overnight stay is more comfortable if the southern coast is the main reason for travelling.

Does Durrës have Albania’s clearest beaches?

No. The local Adriatic beach is sandy, shallow and convenient, especially for families, but the clearer rocky coves associated with the Albanian Riviera are much farther south.

Do boat trips leave directly from central Durrës?

Some local rides do, while many Sazan and Karaburun offers include a road transfer to Vlorë before boarding. Check the meeting point and the full duration on the booking page.
