Durrës Amphitheatre and old town: a self-guided walking route

Updated October 26, 2026 · 5 min read

Central Durrës is compact enough to explore independently, and the amphitheatre should be the anchor rather than a hurried photo stop. Built in the early second century, the Roman structure sits within the modern city and reveals how ancient Dyrrachium, later walls and today’s streets overlap.

A sensible order on foot

Begin at the amphitheatre while you still have energy to look beyond its visible curve. Parts of the monument remain beneath later buildings, and early Christian chapels with mosaic and fresco remains add a second historical layer. Check current opening and ticket arrangements locally rather than relying on an old online price.

From there, continue towards the surviving city walls and the Venetian Tower. The tower is a landmark, but the route between sites is equally useful: it shows how fragments of different periods sit inside an active port city. Finish on the seafront, where the spacious promenade provides a complete change from the dense archaeological centre.

Add the museum, if it is open

The Archaeological Museum gives objects and chronology to ruins that can otherwise feel disconnected. Verify its current opening status before structuring the whole day around it. If it is unavailable, spend longer at the amphitheatre and walls instead of racing to another minor stop.

Independent or guided?

Walk independently if you prefer your own pace and are happy reading background information. A guide is useful when the historical sequence matters more than simply seeing the monuments. Durrës does not require transport between these central stops, so a tour should earn its price through interpretation, not a bus ride.

Allow extra time for uneven surfaces and traffic crossings. Not every archaeological area is step-free; travellers with limited mobility should ask each site about current access rather than assuming the whole route is accessible.

Our choice for most visitors is the self-guided route, followed by the broader selection of things to do in Durrës. If you want historical explanation, compare guided options and confirm that the amphitheatre is included rather than merely passed.
